Cover-up tattoos: what to know before you book

Can your old tattoo be covered? Size, darkness and design all matter. Here is how a cover-up gets planned.

A good cover-up does not hide your old tattoo. It turns it into part of something better.

The new piece is usually bigger To cover old ink, the new design needs enough room and enough dark areas to absorb it. Plan for a piece larger than the one you have.

Darker designs work best Animals, flowers, dragons and anything with deep shading and texture are great for covering. Light, airy designs over dark ink rarely work.

Very dark tattoos may need lightening If the old piece is solid black, a few sessions of laser lightening first can open up many more options.
